Cultivars
Common Tomato
The common commercial tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) comes in many different shapes & sizes. There are so many varieties that there is definitely a tomato right for you:
Cherry & Grape Tomatoes
Most cherry & grape tomatoes descend from S. lycopersicum, but many of them are hybrids with wild tomatoes, usually the Currant Tomato. This gives them the sweetness of heirloom cultivars, combined with the bite-size convenience of wild tomatoes:
Wild Tomatoes
Primordial tomatoes. While not easily commercialized, some of them make great backyard plants. Their hardiness & genetic diversity make them great hybridization candidates for breeding disease & pest resistant tomatoes:
Eggplant
The related Eggplant, while having a different type of flavor profile than the tomato, has a use in many similar types of savory dishes:
Other Nightshade Berries
Other Solanum berries such as Tomatillos and Tamarillos might as well go here too:
